400-meter-long container ship ran aground on the Suez canal

What happened?
On Tuesday morning, 22.03.2021, the logistics industry woke up to a remarkable news.According to the port authority GAC, the ship named MV Evergiven, belonging to Taiwanese evergreen company, ran aground at about 07: 40 CET (08: 40 local time) due to power failure. The vessel is said to have left China and has been heading to Rotterdam. The total weight of the vessel, which has a length of 400 meters and a width of 59 meters, and a capacity of 20.388 TEU, is 220 thousand tons. The ship, after running aground diagonally, affects all ship lines between Asia and Europe currently.
What would be the effect?
This has consequences for many companies and their supply chains, urgently needed products are stuck in the queues. The British newspaper Lloyd’s List has calculated that goods worth 9.6 billion dollars are transported through the canal every day.A prolonged ban on the channel would be bad news, especially for car and computer manufacturers. The industries are already suffering from the global chip shortage, which recently worsened again after the fire at a Japanese manufacturer. Chips are often transported by air freight, but especially when they are built into vendor parts, also by sea container. The route around Africa will become significantly more expensive for container ships. On average, this alternative, which is more expensive than the canal expenses, which costs ship-owners $ 298,000 USD (252,000 EUR) per ship and pass, also takes much longer. More than 200 ships are now standing in the two traffic jams north and south of the canal, waiting for passage through the canal; since an average of 52 ships pass the waterway every day, this number is growing rapidly.Although there are many statements about the rescue of the ship and the opening of the canal, it remains unclear when exactly it will open to traffic.
Solution?

These are the rescue efforts that are currently being emphasized. In the meantime, the Egyptian canal authority has commissioned the rescue specialists from the Dutch specialist company Boskalis. If the ship cannot be rescued from the land with current studies, the option of cargo unloading, which is very risky and dangerous enough to cause the ship to be destroyed, is focused on.Unbalanced load reduction can lead to a very serious problem.
We hope that this problem will be solved in a healthy way as soon as possible. We wish success to all rescue team.
